Front-of-Package Labels Are Now in Effect: What BFF Members Need to Know

Canada’s front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labelling requirements are now in effect and apply to many packaged food products. As of January 1, 2026, certain pre-packaged foods must display a black-and-white nutrition symbol on the front of the package if they are high in sodium, sugars, and/or saturated fat.

The symbol, developed by Health Canada, features a magnifying glass and clearly states when a product is considered “High in sodium,” “High in sugars,” “High in saturated fat,” or a combination of these.

Who is affected?

These rules apply to most pre-packaged foods with a Nutrition Facts table that are made or imported in Canada on or after January 1, 2026. This includes products sold through retail, wholesale, and direct-to-consumer channels.

Some foods are exempt (such as many single-ingredient or basic foods), but processed and ready-to-eat products are commonly in scope.

What this means for your business

  • Products produced or imported before January 1, 2026 may continue to be sold.

  • Any new production or packaging must now comply with the FOP labelling requirements.

  • Non-compliant packaging for new products may lead to delays, relabelling costs, or distribution challenges.

What BFF members should do now

If you are producing or planning to launch packaged products:

  • Confirm your nutritional analysis is current and reflects your actual formulation

  • Check whether your product exceeds the thresholds for sodium, sugars, or saturated fat

  • Update packaging and labels as needed before producing new inventory

If your product does not require a symbol, this can support a clear better-for-you positioning. If it does, being prepared to explain the label clearly to customers can help build trust and transparency.
