From First Purchase to Repeat Customer: Building Loyalty After Summer Events

2 min read

Summer markets, festivals, and community events are valuable opportunities to introduce a product to new customers. But the relationship does not have to end when the event is over. With a few simple follow-up steps, a one-time purchase can become a repeat order, referral, or long-term customer relationship.

Make It Easy to Stay Connected

At the event, invite customers to follow the business on social media or join an email list. Make the next step clear by displaying a QR code, sharing social-media handles, or including a website address on packaging and business cards.

Consider giving customers a specific reason to stay connected, such as:

  • New product announcements.

  • Upcoming markets and events.

  • Seasonal menus or limited-time products.

  • Pre-order opportunities.

  • Special offers for returning customers.

The goal is not simply to collect contact information. It is to create an easy way to continue the conversation after the event.

Ask for Feedback

Customers who try a product at an event can provide valuable insight while the experience is still fresh. A food business could ask questions such as:

  • Which product did you enjoy most?

  • What would you like to see next?

  • How would you use this product?

  • Where would you prefer to purchase it in the future?

Feedback can help identify strong products, improve menus or packaging, and reveal what customers may be willing to purchase again.

Create a Clear Reorder Path

If customers enjoy a product, make it easy for them to buy it again. Include clear information about where and how to order, whether through a website, social media, a retail partner, a storefront, a delivery platform, or an upcoming event.

Depending on the business model, options may include:

  • Weekly or monthly pre-orders.

  • Seasonal bundles.

  • Catering or event packages.

  • Subscription-style orders.

  • A simple reorder form for returning customers.

Follow Up After the Event

A short follow-up message can help a business remain top of mind. Thank customers for visiting, share where they can find the business next, and invite them to place another order or provide feedback.

For businesses that collect email addresses with permission, a follow-up email could include a thank-you message, upcoming dates, and a featured product. Businesses using social media could share an event recap and encourage customers to comment, share photos, or tag someone who may enjoy the product.

Track What Works

After each event, take a few minutes to record what was learned. Note which products sold best, which questions customers asked, how many people followed or subscribed, and whether any customers placed orders afterward.

The most successful event is not always the one with the highest sales on the day. It may be the event that helps identify an ideal customer, a strong product, or the next business opportunity.
